A portable electric heater is one of the largest continuous loads a household plugs in — and it's routinely plugged into extension cords, power strips and tired receptacles. That combination causes a meaningful share of household electrical fires.

A 1,500-watt heater exceeds the continuous limit of a 15-amp circuit on its own. That is the whole problem: it is not that people plug in two by mistake, it is that one heater already uses the entire circuit, so anything else on it pushes past the limit.
How many amps does a space heater draw?
A typical portable heater on its high setting draws close to what a standard branch circuit should carry continuously.
Two things make that harder than the number suggests:
It's a continuous load. Not a brief surge — sustained draw for hours. Connections that tolerate intermittent loads heat steadily under continuous ones.
It's near the circuit's limit by design. Manufacturers size heaters to what a common household circuit can supply, which leaves very little headroom for anything else on that circuit.

What are the rules for safe space heater use?
1. Plug directly into a wall receptacle. Never an extension cord, never a power strip, never a surge protector. This is the single most important rule. See extension cord safety and power strips vs surge protectors.
2. One heater per circuit. And ideally nothing else significant on it.
3. Check the receptacle first. An old, loose receptacle that doesn't grip the plug firmly is a high-resistance connection waiting to overheat. If the plug feels loose in the outlet, don't use that outlet for a heater.
4. Keep clearances. Manufacturers specify a minimum distance from combustibles — curtains, bedding, furniture, paper. Follow it.
5. Never leave it unattended or running overnight in an occupied bedroom, unless the manufacturer specifically supports it and it has tip-over and overheat protection.

Why is my space heater plug hot?
The most important symptom to recognize.
If the heater's plug, the receptacle or the cover plate is warm or hot during use, there's a high-resistance connection somewhere — a worn receptacle, a loose termination, a failing push-in connection behind the device.
That's a fire precursor, not a quirk. Stop using the heater on that outlet and have an electrician inspect the receptacle and circuit.

Why does my space heater trip the breaker?
If a heater trips the breaker, the correct responses are to move it to another circuit, reduce what else is on that circuit, or run it on a lower setting.

Placement
- On the floor, on a hard, level surface — not on furniture, not on carpet where it can tip
- Away from foot traffic so the cord isn't stepped on and the unit isn't knocked over

- Clear of bedding and curtains, always

How much does a space heater cost to run?
Space heaters are electric resistance heat — they convert electricity to heat roughly one for one, with no efficiency multiplier.

Where a space heater does make sense: briefly, in one occupied room, so you can lower the whole-house setpoint. Where it doesn't: as a primary heat source, or running in multiple rooms all winter.

When a heater signals something else
Worth stepping back. Regular space heater use usually means one of:
- A room that's under-heated — a duct problem, a closed damper, or poor distribution. See ductwork problems and cost.
