Wiring Basics

Electrical Wire Color Codes Explained

In US residential wiring black and red are ungrounded (hot), white is the grounded neutral, and green or bare is the equipment ground. The conventions have real exceptions: a white conductor re-identified as a switch leg is the common one, so test every conductor before touching it.

Junction Boxes Explained

Every splice must be inside an enclosed box, and every box must remain accessible without removing building finish: NEC 314.29. A buried junction box is a code violation you cannot see and the thing nobody can find when that circuit fails. Box fill limits under NEC 314.16 cap how many conductors fit.

Electrical Wire Types: The Five Used in American Homes

Five wire types cover almost every American home: NM-B (Romex) for dry interior runs, UF for direct burial, THHN/THWN-2 pulled in conduit, MC cable, and older armored cable. Location decides which is legal, not preference.

What Is Romex (NM Cable)?

NM-B, commonly called Romex, is non-metallic sheathed cable for dry interior locations, and the jacket colour states the gauge: white is 14 AWG, yellow 12, orange 10, black 8 and 6. NEC 334.80 requires its ampacity to be taken from the 60°C column despite 90°C conductor insulation.

Wire Gauge (AWG): How to Read It and Pick the Right Size

Wire gauge (AWG) runs backwards: the smaller the number, the thicker the conductor. 14 AWG carries 15 amps, 12 AWG carries 20, 10 AWG carries 30. The breaker is always chosen to protect the wire, never the other way around.

Old & Problem Wiring

Two-Prong Outlets and Ungrounded Circuits

The NEC permits replacing an ungrounded two-prong receptacle with a GFCI labelled "No Equipment Ground": legal, and it provides real shock protection. It does not create a ground, so surge protectors and some electronics still will not have the path they need.

Aluminum Branch Wiring: The Real Risk and the Accepted Fixes

Aluminum branch circuit wiring, used in homes built roughly 1965–1975, isn't dangerous along its length; it fails at the connections, where thermal expansion, oxidation and creep loosen terminations until they overheat. The accepted repairs are specific, and ordinary wire nuts are not among them.

Backstabbed Receptacles: Why They Fail

A backstabbed receptacle holds the conductor with a small spring blade pushed into a hole in the back, instead of clamped under a screw terminal. It is permitted, but the small contact area loosens with thermal cycling, which makes it a leading cause of intermittent outlets and heat at the device.

Cloth and Rubber Insulated Wiring

In pre-1960s wiring the insulation is the consumable part: rubber hardens and cracks, cloth jackets embrittle, and the conductors end up bare inside boxes. The tell is at terminations, where heat cycling is worst; if insulation crumbles when flexed there, it is failing along the whole run.

Knob and Tube Wiring: What to Know

Knob and tube is early-1900s wiring with no equipment ground, rubber-and-cloth insulation that embrittles with age, and conductors run separately through open air. NEC 394.12 prohibits it in any space filled with thermal insulation, because it relies on that open air to shed heat; insulating an attic over live knob and tube is how it turns dangerous.

When to Rewire a House

Age alone is not a reason to rewire. The trigger is failing insulation on a wiring method that cannot be repaired in place: live knob and tube, or embrittled cloth and rubber. Aluminium branch wiring needs listed connectors rather than a rewire, and two-prong outlets need GFCI protection.

Everyday Electrical Safety

Childproofing Electrical Outlets

Tamper-resistant receptacles are the effective fix: internal shutters block anything that is not a proper two-blade plug, and they have been required in new dwellings since the 2008 NEC. Plastic plug caps are the weakest option, removable by many toddlers, and a choking hazard themselves.

Extension Cord Safety

Extension cords are temporary equipment. Match the gauge to both load and length: 16 AWG carries 13 amps at 25 feet but only 10 at 50; never run them under rugs or through doorways, and treat a permanently used cord as a missing outlet rather than a solution.

Holiday and Outdoor Lighting Safety

Outdoor lighting needs outdoor-rated cords and lights, a GFCI-protected receptacle, and a weatherproof in-use cover where a cord stays plugged in. Respect the manufacturer’s maximum number of strings connected end to end; the first plug carries the current of everything after it.

Surge Protector vs Power Strip: What's the Difference?

A power strip just multiplies outlets and offers no protection at all. A surge protector adds metal-oxide varistors that clamp voltage spikes, rated in joules, but those components degrade with every hit and stop protecting long before the strip stops passing power.

Space Heater Electrical Safety

A 1,500-watt space heater draws 12.5 amps, which already exceeds the 12-amp continuous limit of a 15-amp circuit on its own. That is the whole problem: it needs the circuit to itself, must never go on a power strip or extension cord, and needs 3 feet of clearance from anything combustible.

Water and Electricity: Home Safety Rules

GFCI protection trips at roughly 5 milliamps of imbalance, well below the level that can stop a heart, which is why the NEC requires it wherever water and electricity meet: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, laundry and outdoors. Any equipment that has been submerged is replaced, not dried out.

Warning Signs

Open Ground Outlet: What the Tester Means and How to Fix It

An open ground reading means the receptacle's ground pin has no path back to the panel. Usually it's a three-prong receptacle on an old two-wire circuit, sometimes a broken or disconnected ground wire. The legal fixes are a real ground wire, a labeled GFCI, or a two-prong receptacle. A jumper to the neutral is not one of them.

Reverse Polarity Outlet: Why It's Dangerous and How to Fix It

A reverse polarity outlet has the hot wire on the neutral terminal and the neutral on the hot. Everything still works, but the parts a polarized plug is designed to keep dead, like a lamp's screw shell, stay energized with the switch off. The fix is moving two wires to the right screws, with the breaker off.

Open Neutral: What It Means, and When It's an Emergency

On a single circuit, an open neutral is usually a loose or broken neutral at a device or splice: the outlet goes dead and a plug-in tester flags it. When the service neutral or a shared multiwire neutral opens, 120-volt loads end up in series across 240 volts, some lights go bright while others dim, and equipment can be destroyed. That version is an emergency.

Burning Smell From an Outlet: What to Do

A sharp, acrid or "fishy" smell from a receptacle is overheating thermoset plastic in the device body, and it means a connection is running hot right now. Kill the circuit at the panel before investigating: this is the symptom that precedes a fire, not one that follows a fault.

Buzzing Electrical Sounds: What's Normal and What Isn't

A faint hum from a dimmer, transformer or fluorescent ballast is normal. Buzzing or crackling from a panel, outlet or switch is not: that is a loose termination carrying current and generating heat, and it does not resolve on its own.

Electrical Shocks and Tingles From Appliances

A tingle from an appliance case, a faucet or a pipe means current is already leaking onto something you touch: usually failing insulation or a bootleg ground. How mild it feels reflects your footwear and the floor, not how dangerous the fault is. GFCI protection trips at about 5 milliamps.

Lights Flickering in the House: Causes and When to Worry

Lights flickering in one fixture is usually a loose bulb or a dimmer mismatch. Lights flickering throughout the whole house points to a loose service neutral or a failing main connection: that one is a fire and equipment hazard, and it needs an electrician now.

Warm Outlets and Switches: What It Means

A dimmer running slightly warm is normal; it dissipates heat by design. Any other receptacle or switch should be at room temperature. Warmth means resistance, resistance means a loose or degraded connection, and that condition worsens on its own. Kill the circuit if it is hot to the touch.

Fire, Alarms & Inspection

What Causes Electrical Fires in Homes

Most residential electrical fires start at a connection rather than in the wire: a loose terminal develops resistance, resistance makes heat, and heat loosens it further. That is why a warm receptacle, a buzzing panel or a burning smell matters so much more than it seems.

Home Electrical Inspection Before Buying

A general home inspector opens the panel, tests a sample of outlets and flags visible defects. They do not run a load calculation, assess wiring type for insurability, or detect a bootleg ground, which is why a Federal Pacific panel, live knob and tube or aluminium branch wiring warrants a separate electrical evaluation.

Smoke and CO Alarm Placement

Smoke alarms go inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including the basement. CO alarms go outside sleeping areas, on every level, and near an attached garage. Interconnected alarms are what actually wake a household, and both types expire, typically at 10 years.
