Childproofing Electrical Outlets

Outlet childproofing is one of the few home safety topics where the common product is the weaker answer and the better one is permanent, invisible and inexpensive.
How do you childproof electrical outlets?

Tamper-resistant receptacles have been required in new dwelling construction since the 2008 NEC, so a modern house likely already has them — look for "TR" stamped on the receptacle face. Retrofitting them is inexpensive and strictly better than caps.
What is a tamper-resistant receptacle?
A tamper-resistant (TR) receptacle has internal shutters covering the slots. The shutters only open when equal pressure is applied to both slots simultaneously — which happens when a plug is inserted, and doesn't happen when a child pushes a single object into one slot.
They're marked TR on the face, look identical to ordinary receptacles otherwise, and cost only marginally more.
Why they're better than caps:
- Always working. No one has to remember anything.
- No choking hazard. Nothing to remove and drop.
- Nothing to teach curiosity. A cap that gets pulled out is a puzzle a child solves; a shutter isn't.
- Covers every outlet, including the ones behind furniture you forgot about
- Permanent — they protect the next family too
The NEC requires tamper-resistant receptacles in dwelling units, introduced and then expanded across code cycles. New work and replacements generally must be TR, though existing older receptacles are typically permitted to remain — so an older home likely doesn't have them.

Are plastic outlet caps safe?
The familiar plastic plug-in caps:
- Are a choking hazard — small, and children remove them
- Get taken out and not replaced, particularly at outlets used regularly
- Train the behavior you're trying to prevent, since removing them is a game
- Only cover what you remembered
- Give false confidence
They're better than an unprotected outlet, and they're a reasonable stopgap at a rental or a grandparent's house. They're not the answer for a home you own.
Sliding cover plates — where a spring-loaded cover slides over the outlet when unplugged — are a middle option: no loose parts, though the plate mechanism can wear.
Are cords more dangerous than outlets?
Outlets get the attention; cords cause more incidents.
Dangling cords get pulled, bringing lamps, kettles and appliances down on a child.
Chewing on a cord is a serious injury mechanism and one of the more common ways young children are hurt by household electricity.
Cords across floors are trip hazards for everyone.
Practical steps:
- Shorten and secure cords behind furniture
- Use cord covers or channels where cords must cross open floor
- Keep cords off counters where they can be pulled — kettles and slow cookers especially
- Unplug and store appliances not in use

Power strips
A power strip at floor level is a row of accessible outlets plus a switch.
- Use power strip covers where a strip must be at floor level
- Mount strips off the floor where possible
- Keep them out of reach behind furniture
- Remember a strip's outlets are not tamper-resistant unless specified

GFCI protection
Worth pairing with childproofing. GFCI devices open the circuit quickly when current takes an unintended path — including through a person.
They're required in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, garages, basements and outdoors under recent code editions, and adding them where an older home lacks them is a straightforward improvement. See water and electricity safety and GFCI outlet requirements by room.
Other things to secure
Space heaters. Tip-over risk, hot surfaces, and a cord children pull. Keep out of reach, use models with tip-over shutoff, and never leave running unattended around children. See space heater electrical safety.
The electrical panel. Should be inaccessible to small children. Panels in play areas or finished basements deserve consideration — though note that working clearance must be maintained. See electrical panel working clearance requirements.
Lamps without bulbs. An empty socket in a reachable lamp is an open contact. Keep bulbs installed or unplug the lamp.
Damaged devices. A cracked receptacle face or a wobbly plug fit is worth replacing anyway, and more so with children around.

A simple plan
- Replace receptacles with TR versions in living areas, bedrooms and playrooms
- Add GFCI protection where recent code would require it, if the house lacks it
- Secure and shorten cords, especially anything dangling from a counter
- Cover or elevate power strips
- Use caps only as a temporary measure — travel, rentals, visits
- Keep space heaters out of reach or don't use them in children's rooms
The bottom line
Tamper-resistant receptacles solve the outlet problem permanently and cheaply, without the choking risk and remember-to-replace failure mode of plastic caps — which are fine for a hotel room and poor as a home strategy. Then spend the rest of your attention on cords, which cause more injuries than outlets do: shorten them, secure them, keep them off counters, and get rid of the extension cords by adding the receptacles you actually need.
