Extension cords are designed as temporary wiring, and nearly every problem with them comes from treating them as permanent.
Cord gauge, length and safe load
Ampacity falls as a cord gets longer, because voltage drop and heat both accumulate over the run.

A 1,500-watt space heater draws 12.5 amps — which rules out a 16 AWG cord at any useful length, and rules out 14 AWG past 50 feet. Extension cords are for temporary use; permanent reliance on one is a sign a circuit is missing, not a cord problem.
What are the rules for safe extension cord use?
1. Never run a high-draw heating appliance on one. Space heaters, portable air conditioners and similar loads draw high current continuously, which is exactly the duty cords handle worst. See space heater electrical safety.
2. Never run EV charging equipment on one. EVSE cable is engineered for continuous high current with specific conductor sizing and strain relief. 3. Never run a cord under a rug or carpet. Rugs trap heat and hide damage, and foot traffic crushes conductors over time. It's a well-documented ignition scenario.

What gauge extension cord do you need?
Cords have a gauge like any conductor, and smaller numbers mean larger wire. See wire gauge explained.
Two things determine what you need:
The load. Cords carry an amperage or wattage rating. Use one rated comfortably above what you're plugging in.
The length. Resistance and voltage drop increase with distance, so a longer cord needs a heavier gauge for the same load. A cord that's adequate at 25 feet may not be at 100 feet.
Practical guidance:
- Heavier gauge than you think you need, especially for tools and anything with a motor
- Shortest cord that reaches — don't use a 100-foot cord for a 20-foot job
- Fully uncoil it. A coiled cord under load traps heat, and a cord coiled on a reel can overheat well below its rated capacity.
That last point catches people with cord reels: the rating usually assumes the cord is fully unwound.
Can you use an indoor extension cord outside?
Cords are rated for their environment, and the rating is printed on the jacket.
Outdoor-rated cords have jackets resistant to moisture, sunlight and temperature extremes, and are typically more robust mechanically.
Indoor cords used outside degrade — the jacket cracks, moisture reaches conductors, and you have a shock and fire path.
For anything outdoors:
- Use an outdoor-rated cord

- Keep connections out of standing water and off wet ground

Grounding
Use a three-prong grounded cord for anything with a three-prong plug.
Never:
- Cut off the grounding pin to fit a two-prong receptacle
- Use a three-to-two-prong adapter without a genuine grounding means

What damages cords
Inspect before each use, and look for:
- Cracked, cut or abraded jacket — any exposed conductor means retire it
- Crushed sections from doors, furniture or vehicles
- Damage at the plug, where cords flex most
- Loose or wobbly plug blades
- Discoloration or melting at either end
- A warm cord during use — that's an overload or an undersized cord
Damaged cords get replaced, not repaired. Taping a cut jacket doesn't restore the insulation, and a spliced extension cord isn't a repaired cord.
Can you plug one extension cord into another?
Plugging cords into each other compounds voltage drop and adds connection points — each one a potential resistance and heat source.

The real signal: a permanent cord means a missing outlet
Here's the useful reframe.
If an extension cord has been in the same place for months, that room needs a receptacle. Permanent cord use means:
- The cord is subject to daily wear it wasn't designed for
- It's likely routed somewhere it will be pinched or walked on
- The underlying problem — inadequate receptacle count — is unaddressed

Can an extension cord run through a wall?
Extension cords must not be:
- Run through walls, ceilings or floors
- Run through doorways or windows that close on them
- Stapled or nailed to the structure
- Run under doors or through door frames

Circuit loading
Even a properly sized cord doesn't add capacity. Plugging multiple devices into one cord can exceed what the circuit supports, and the breaker — not the cord — is what protects that.

The bottom line
Never put a space heater, a portable air conditioner or EV charging equipment on an extension cord, and never run one under a rug. Match gauge to both load and length, uncoil fully, use outdoor-rated cords with GFCI protection outdoors, and retire any cord with jacket damage rather than taping it. And treat a permanently deployed cord as what it is — a missing receptacle you should install.
