Receptacles are the most-touched electrical devices in a house and the ones most often bought at the lowest possible grade. The failure mode is mechanical: contact springs relax, plugs sag, resistance rises, and heat follows. Grade — builder, commercial spec, industrial spec — is mostly a rating of how long the contacts keep their grip.

Two device families deserve specific attention. Self-test GFCIs continuously verify their own protection circuitry and lock out if they can no longer protect — a meaningful upgrade over older units that fail silent. And behind a plug-in EV charger, the receptacle carries a continuous 40-amp load daily; the EV-rated 14-50s exist because standard range receptacles were never designed for that duty and have a documented melting habit.

Everything here is UL listed with manufacturer-published specs only. Receptacle replacement on an existing circuit is among the simpler electrical jobs, but current dwelling code has requirements — tamper resistance, GFCI locations — that make the parts list worth checking against your jurisdiction's adopted NEC edition.
