The junction box rule is one of the simplest and most consistently violated principles in home wiring: every splice goes in a box, and every box stays reachable.

The one that causes real trouble later is accessibility: a buried junction box is a code violation you cannot see, and it becomes the thing nobody can find when that circuit fails.
Why are junction boxes required?
A box does four jobs:
Contains faults. If a connection arcs or overheats, a metal or approved plastic enclosure confines it rather than letting it ignite surrounding framing and insulation.
Provides mechanical support. Cables are secured at the box so conductors aren't pulled at their terminations.
Keeps connections accessible. Connections are the part of an electrical system most likely to fail over time. Being able to inspect them is the point.
Protects the connection from physical damage, dust, insulation and pests.
Do junction boxes have to be accessible?
A junction box must remain accessible — you must be able to reach the cover without removing part of the building structure or finish.
That means:
- Not drywalled over
- Not behind permanently installed cabinetry or paneling
- Not buried in insulation to the point of being unfindable
- Not concealed above a permanent ceiling with no access
An attic or crawlspace box is generally acceptable if you can physically get to it. A box behind a finished wall is not.
Why are buried splices dangerous?
A splice made outside a box and covered by drywall is a genuine fire risk, and it's common in DIY work and unpermitted renovations.
The problem is compounding:
- Connections loosen over time with thermal cycling
- A loose connection develops resistance, which generates heat
- Heat accelerates the loosening — a runaway
- Inside a wall cavity, this happens against wood framing and insulation, unseen
There's no warning and no inspection path. This is exactly the failure mode boxes exist to prevent, and it's why home inspectors and electricians take buried splices seriously rather than treating them as paperwork.

What is box fill?
Boxes have a volume, and the NEC limits what may occupy it based on conductor sizes, devices, clamps and fittings — each counted according to defined rules.
Why it matters:
- Heat. Crowded conductors can't shed heat.
- Damage. Forcing a device into a packed box damages insulation and stresses terminations.
- Terminations. Conductors bent into unnatural positions pull at their screws.
Overfilled boxes are among the most common inspection failures in homeowner work, and they're easy to avoid by using a deeper box.

Box types
New work boxes attach to framing before drywall — nailed or screwed to a stud.
Old work (remodel) boxes clamp to the drywall itself, for retrofits where you can't reach framing. Fine when used correctly, but they rely on the drywall for support, so they're less robust.
Metal vs plastic. Metal boxes must be bonded to the equipment grounding conductor. Plastic (nonmetallic) boxes don't require bonding but need the grounding conductor properly connected to devices.
Ceiling boxes for fixtures must be rated for the weight they carry, and fan-rated boxes are specifically required for ceiling fans — a standard box is not adequate for the dynamic load of a spinning fan. This is a common and consequential error.

Covers are not optional
Every box needs a cover, faceplate or fixture canopy.
An open box:
- Exposes live connections to contact
- Allows dust, insulation and pests to reach terminals
- Removes the containment that confines arcing
Open junction boxes in basements, attics and garages are extremely common and trivially fixable — a blank cover plate costs almost nothing.
What junction box defects are common?
Walking a basement, attic or garage:
- Splices with wire nuts hanging in the open, no box
- Boxes with no cover
- Boxes drywalled over — sometimes visible as a patched square
- Cable entering a box with no connector, sheath not extending into the box
- Overcrowded boxes where the device barely seats
- Ceiling fans on non-fan-rated boxes
- Boxes hanging loose, not secured to framing
- Cable unsupported near the box
Any of these are worth an electrician's assessment. Several are quick fixes; buried splices and unsupported cable are the ones that matter most.

- Use a deeper box than you think you need
- Never bury a splice — if you need a connection, you need an accessible box
- Secure the cable at the box with a proper connector
- Leave enough conductor length to work with — the code specifies a minimum free length
