The electrical requirement for a heat pump water heater is straightforward, with one detail that matters enormously for electrification planning: not all of them need 240V.

The electrical side is usually the easy part — a heat pump water heater drops onto the same 30 A circuit a resistance tank used. The constraints that actually block installs are air volume, ceiling height and condensate drainage.

The two paths

240V models. The majority. Require a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the nameplate. Faster recovery, and most include resistance backup elements for high-demand mode.

120V plug-in models. Run from a standard outlet. No new circuit, no electrician, no permit for electrical work. Recovery is slower, so tank sizing matters more.

What size circuit does a heat pump water heater need?

Size from the manufacturer's installation instructions, which state the required circuit ampacity for that specific model. Listed equipment must be installed per its instructions, and the requirement varies with tank size and with the resistance element configuration.

Can a heat pump water heater reuse the old circuit?

If you're replacing a conventional electric water heater, the existing 240V circuit may work. Check:

  1. Ampacity — does the existing breaker and conductor size meet or exceed the new unit's requirement?
  2. Condition — is the wiring in good shape, with sound terminations?
  3. Location — if you're relocating the unit for air volume reasons, the existing circuit may not reach

If you're converting from gas, there's almost certainly no circuit at that location, so this is new work.

The disconnect

A disconnecting means within sight of the equipment is commonly required for hardwired appliances, so someone servicing the unit can de-energize it locally.

Why water heaters suit load management especially well

Worth calling out.

A tank water heater stores energy as hot water. That means it can heat at any convenient time and deliver later — unlike, say, a cooktop, which needs power exactly when you're cooking.

Consequences:

  • It can be scheduled to off-peak hours on a time-of-use rate, which is a real saving
  • It can be shed during high household demand without anyone noticing
  • It's a natural candidate for a listed energy management system, which can allow it to be counted at a controlled maximum in the load calculation

Permits

Water heater replacement is normally permitted work, and adding a 240V branch circuit certainly is. The inspector checks listing, breaker-and-conductor match, dedicated circuit, disconnect, grounding, terminations, and that the load calculation supports the addition — plus the plumbing and any venting changes.
