Which Appliances Need a Dedicated Circuit?

A dedicated circuit serves one appliance and nothing else. One breaker, one cable, one load.

Three different things create the requirement: the NEC directly, the manufacturer's listed instructions (which the NEC makes enforceable), and plain practicality.

Which circuits does the NEC require to be dedicated?

These are code requirements for dwelling units, in general terms:

Kitchen small-appliance circuits. At least two 20-amp circuits serving the countertop receptacles. Not strictly "dedicated" — they serve multiple receptacles — but they may not serve other rooms or other loads. This is why a properly wired kitchen doesn't trip when the kettle and the toaster run together.

Laundry circuit. A 20-amp circuit for the laundry area receptacles, serving no other outlets.

Bathroom receptacle circuit. A 20-amp circuit serving bathroom receptacles. It may serve multiple bathrooms, or all outlets in one bathroom, depending on how it's arranged.

Fixed and stationary appliances. Where an appliance is fastened in place and draws a significant portion of a circuit, the NEC's rules on branch circuits supplying both fixed appliances and other loads effectively require separation.

When does an appliance require its own circuit?

The NEC requires listed equipment to be installed per its instructions, which turns manufacturer requirements into code requirements. Appliances whose instructions commonly call for a dedicated circuit:

Always read the actual nameplate. Air conditioners and heat pumps specify minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent protection, and both must be followed — see what size breaker do I need.

Not code, but standard practice:

Refrigerator and freezer. A tripped shared breaker means spoiled food discovered a day later. Common practice is a dedicated circuit; many manufacturers recommend it.

Home office equipment. A desktop, monitors, and a laser printer together can push a shared bedroom circuit, and a nuisance trip mid-work is expensive in a different way.

Space heaters. A 1,500-watt heater is 12.5 amps — most of a 15-amp circuit on its own. Permanent heater locations benefit from their own circuit; portable ones simply need attention to what else is on the circuit.

Window air conditioners. Similar draw and similar duty cycle.

Workshop tools. Table saws, compressors, and welders have inrush currents that trip shared circuits and are hard on shared wiring.

Aquariums and medical equipment. Anything where an unnoticed trip has consequences beyond inconvenience.

Why dedicated circuits matter

Nuisance tripping. A dedicated circuit can only be tripped by its own appliance, which makes diagnosis trivial and outages rare.

Motor inrush. Compressors and pumps draw several times running current at startup. On a shared circuit, that inrush plus an existing load can exceed the breaker's instantaneous threshold.

Voltage sag. A large motor starting on a shared circuit dips voltage momentarily — the reason lights flicker when the fridge kicks on. A dedicated circuit isolates that.

Serviceability. Killing one breaker de-energizes exactly one appliance, without taking out half a floor.

What is the 80% rule for a dedicated circuit?

For continuous loads — three hours or more — the circuit is limited to 80% of the breaker rating. That's why EV charging drives circuit sizes that look oversized:

  • A 40-amp charger needs a 50-amp circuit
  • A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit

Planning capacity

Each dedicated circuit occupies panel slots — one for 120 volts, two adjacent for 240 volts. A kitchen remodel can easily add five or six circuits, and a panel with scattered single free slots may not have the adjacent pairs a 240-volt circuit needs.
