The 120V category is the most useful development in home electrification for anyone with a full panel. These appliances do the same jobs as their 240V counterparts, more slowly, from an ordinary outlet — which removes the electrician, the permit, the panel capacity question and the largest chunk of the project cost.

Which appliances come in 120V versions?

These appliances draw considerably more than typical 120V loads. If the outlet you plan to use shares a circuit with other things — a laundry room outlet also serving lights and a freezer, say — you may get nuisance tripping.

Check the specific model's requirement. Some specify a dedicated 120V circuit.

Even so, a dedicated 120V circuit is a much smaller job than a 240V one: smaller conductors, smaller breaker, less panel impact. If your panel has one spare space, that's often enough.

When is a 120V appliance the right choice?

Your panel is full and staying full. The primary case.

The circuit run would be expensive. A long run through finished walls to a distant utility room can cost more than the appliance.

You're staging a project. Convert now on 120V, upgrade to 240V later if it turns out you need the speed.

Where to be careful

Heavy-demand households. Large families with concentrated hot water and laundry demand will notice slower recovery.

Check availability. The 120V category is newer and model selection is narrower than 240V.

Verify the outlet's condition. An old receptacle heating under sustained load is a genuine hazard. If the plug or cover plate is warm during operation, stop and have it inspected.

Combining with other approaches

  3. If it does, run the 240V circuit later and upgrade
  4. If it doesn't — and it often doesn't — you've saved the entire electrical project
