A heat pump water heater is physically different from the gas unit it replaces in ways that determine where it can go. Checking placement before buying is the step that prevents an expensive surprise on install day.
How much air volume does a heat pump water heater need?
The unit extracts heat from surrounding air. A small enclosed space runs out of heat to give, and the unit either underperforms or falls back to resistance heating — losing the efficiency that justified buying it.

A basement, which stays relatively stable year-round, is usually the better cold-climate choice.

These units contain a compressor and a fan, making them roughly comparable to a refrigerator or window air conditioner in noise.

- Service access preserved
