The economically sound way to electrify is to let equipment live out its life and choose electric when it dies. The problem with that strategy is entirely practical: appliances fail at the worst possible time, and an unprepared homeowner in an emergency buys whatever can be installed fastest — which is almost always the like-for-like gas replacement.

2. Confirm the circuit. Does the electrical circuit exist? If not, can it be added quickly, or does it require panel work? This is the item most likely to make the electric option slow, so resolving it in advance is worth more than anything else on this list. When to replace early anyway
Replace-on-failure isn't absolute. Convert early when:
- The equipment is unsafe — a cracked heat exchanger, a failed vent, a CO issue. Safety isn't an economic decision.
- A large repair is due. If a repair costs a meaningful fraction of replacement on old equipment, put the money toward the replacement instead.
- You're renovating anyway and the walls, kitchen or utility room are already open.
- A panel upgrade is happening and it makes sense to do everything at once.
