Typical service life for central air conditioning is 15 to 20 years. Heat pumps, running year-round, accumulate roughly double the hours and typically land closer to 15.
But averages hide the actual variables, and none of the big ones are the brand.

Mini splits often do well because the compressor modulates rather than hard-starting, and inverter equipment runs at lower stress most of the time.
What shortens an air conditioner’s life?
1. Restricted airflow
The leading cause of premature failure, and it's free to prevent.
A clogged filter or blocked returns reduce airflow across the evaporator coil. The coil runs colder than designed and can freeze, and a frozen coil risks liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor — which is how compressors die.

2. Poor installation
Three specific errors, all invisible to the homeowner:
- Incorrect refrigerant charge. Over or under, both stress the compressor and cut efficiency.

- Inadequate ductwork. High static pressure makes the blower work harder and starves the coil.
This is why commissioning matters: measured charge, measured airflow, measured static pressure. A system that was never verified was never known to be right.
3. Environment
Coastal salt air corrodes coils and cabinets aggressively — units near the ocean can lose years. Coated-coil options exist and are worth it there.
Road salt in northern climates does similar damage to units near driveways.
Cottonwood, pollen, and grass clippings foul the condenser coil, forcing the system to run hotter and longer.
4. Runtime
A system in Phoenix runs vastly more hours than one in Portland. A heat pump runs in both seasons. Hours accumulate wear regardless of care.
5. Neglect of small failures
A weak capacitor makes the compressor work harder to start. A pitted contactor causes electrical stress. A slow refrigerant leak means the system runs undercharged and under-lubricated for months.

How do you know an AC is failing?
- Repairs becoming frequent — two or more service calls in a season
- Rising bills with no change in use, indicating declining efficiency
- Struggling to keep up in weather it used to handle
- Refrigerant leaks, particularly a coil leak
- Loud or new noises — grinding, screeching
- Age past 15 years combined with any of the above
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
Weigh four things.
1. The specific repair. Capacitors, contactors, and fan motors are inexpensive and worth doing at almost any age. Compressors and evaporator coils are major, and on an older system usually tip toward replacement.
2. Age against expected life. Under 10 years, repair. Past 15, a major repair is investing in something near the end.

4. Warranty. Many manufacturers cover parts for 10 years with registration — but parts only. Labor and refrigerant are often the larger share of the bill.
A useful heuristic: if the repair costs more than about a third of a replacement and the system is past two-thirds of its expected life, replacement usually wins.
If you're replacing, price a heat pump
The hardware and installation overlap almost entirely with a cooling-only system, the premium is usually modest, and you gain efficient heating.

Extending what you have
- Change filters on schedule. The single highest-value habit.
- Rinse the condenser coil once or twice a season, gently, power off.
- Keep clearances. No enclosures, trimmed vegetation.
- Fix small things promptly.
- Get charge and airflow verified if the system has never been commissioned properly.
- Seal the ducts. Reduces runtime, which reduces wear.
