Dryer Electrical Requirements Explained

Dryer circuits are one of the few places in a house where you'll encounter both 120V and 240V options for the same appliance category — and which one you need has become the deciding factor in a lot of electrification projects.

The two paths

Conventional electric dryer. Uses a large resistance heating element. Needs a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the appliance's nameplate rating.

Heat pump dryer. Uses a heat pump instead of a resistance element, requiring far less power. Many models run on a standard 120V circuit. Some larger or faster models still use 240V.

What size circuit does an electric dryer need?

The circuit must be sized per the appliance's nameplate rating, which varies by model. The manufacturer's installation instructions state the required circuit ampacity, and listed equipment must be installed per its instructions.

What outlet does an electric dryer use?

Current practice for a 240V dryer is a four-wire configuration — two ungrounded conductors, a neutral, and an equipment grounding conductor. The common receptacle is a NEMA 14-30.

Older installations used a three-wire configuration (NEMA 10-30), where the neutral also served the grounding function. Existing three-wire dryer installations may be permitted to remain under specific conditions, but new circuits use four-wire.

Why the change: in a three-wire arrangement, a break in the neutral could energize the appliance frame. The four-wire arrangement separates the grounding path from the current-carrying neutral.

Important practical consequence: the appliance's cord must match your receptacle. If you have a three-wire receptacle and buy a four-wire cord, it won't fit — and adapting between them is not a matter of buying an adapter. If your home has an old three-wire receptacle, discuss with your electrician whether it stays or gets updated to four-wire.

Cord kits are sold separately

A recurring install-day surprise: most dryers ship without a power cord, because the manufacturer doesn't know which configuration your home has.

Buy the cord kit that matches your receptacle, and confirm before delivery day. This is a five-minute problem that becomes a wasted appointment.

Dedicated means dedicated

A dryer circuit serves the dryer and nothing else. Not the washer, not a laundry-room outlet, not a freezer.

Can a dryer run on 120 volts?

If you're going this route, check three things:

1. Does the model specify a dedicated circuit? Some 120V heat pump dryers want their own circuit rather than sharing a general-purpose one. The manual says.

2. What's already on the laundry outlet's circuit? A gas dryer only used a small amount of power for controls and the drum motor. A heat pump dryer draws considerably more. If that circuit also serves other loads, it may need to be dedicated.

3. Is the receptacle in good condition? An old receptacle heating under sustained load is a genuine hazard. If the plug or cover plate is warm during operation, stop and have it inspected.

Does a dryer need panel capacity added?

A 240V dryer circuit is a meaningful addition to a load calculation. Before committing:

  1. Choose a 120V heat pump dryer — the cleanest solution, and it removes the load almost entirely

Permits

Adding a 240V branch circuit is permitted work in most jurisdictions. The inspector checks listing, breaker-and-conductor match, dedicated circuit, grounding and bonding, terminations, and that the load calculation supports the addition.
