Replacing a Gas Dryer with Electric: The Process

Of the four gas appliances in a typical home, the dryer is usually the easiest to convert — and it's frequently the one standing between you and cancelling gas service entirely.

What do you need before replacing a gas dryer?

Look at the laundry area:

What circuit does an electric dryer need?

Who caps the gas line for a dryer?

Licensed work. A plumber or gas fitter shuts off the supply, disconnects the appliance connector, and installs a proper cap on the piping. Normally permitted and inspected.

Two points:

  • A cap, not just a closed valve. A shutoff valve is a control device, not a permanent termination.
  • Consider removing the branch back to the tee if nothing will use it again — cleaner than a capped stub in the wall, and it avoids questions at future inspections.

Step 4: Deal with the vent

If you chose a vented electric dryer: reuse the existing vent. Check its condition while the old dryer is out — this is the one moment the duct is accessible. Clean it, confirm it terminates outside (not into the attic or crawlspace), and check the exterior damper works.

If you chose a heat pump dryer: the vent becomes unused. Cap and seal it. An open duct is an air leakage path through the envelope and a pest entry point. This takes minutes and is easy to forget.

Step 5: Install and set up

Plumb the condensate to a drain if possible. Most heat pump dryers can either drain to a standpipe or collect water in a reservoir you empty each cycle. If the laundry area has a drain — and it usually does, for the washer — plumbing to it is worth the small extra effort. Emptying a reservoir every load gets tedious quickly.

Can you drop gas service after the dryer?

This is the step that makes the whole project worthwhile.

If the dryer was your last gas appliance, you can now:

  1. Have any remaining gas piping capped or removed
  2. Contact the utility to remove the meter and close the account
  3. Stop paying the fixed monthly service charge permanently

  • Cycles run longer. Start loads earlier.
  • Clean the condenser filter on the manufacturer's schedule — the most-skipped maintenance item, and skipping it makes clothes come out damp

  • The unit rejects some heat into the room
