Ventless Dryer Installation: What to Know

The appeal of a ventless dryer is that it eliminates the duct — which is what dictates where a conventional dryer can go. The install is simpler as a result, but there are three things to get right: the water, the air around it, and the vent you're no longer using.

The install advantage is real: no exterior penetration, which is what makes ventless the answer for interior laundry rooms, condos and retrofits. The costs are longer cycles and a condensate path — either a drain connection or a reservoir you empty.
How does a ventless dryer handle condensate?
Moisture condensed out of the circulating air has to go somewhere. Two options, and one is clearly better.
Drain connection. A hose runs to a standpipe, laundry sink or floor drain. Set it up once and never think about it. If the laundry area has a washer, a suitable drain is almost certainly nearby.
Reservoir. A removable tank you empty each cycle. Works anywhere, requires no plumbing, and becomes tedious quickly. Most machines stop and signal when the tank is full, so forgetting means an interrupted cycle.
Choose the drain if the connection exists. It's a small amount of extra setup for a permanent convenience improvement. Many machines support both, so you can start with the reservoir and plumb it later.

- Secure the hose so it can't fall out of the standpipe

How much clearance does a ventless dryer need?
A ventless dryer doesn't exhaust air, but it does reject some heat into the room, and it needs airflow across its own condenser to work efficiently.
That means:
- A completely sealed closet with no air movement isn't ideal. A louvered door, an undercut door, or a modest gap is usually sufficient.
- Check the manufacturer's clearance requirements — sides, back and top. These exist for airflow and service access.
- Very warm ambient temperatures reduce performance, since the machine is rejecting heat into the same air it's drawing from.
- Very cold spaces also reduce performance — an unheated garage in a cold climate is a poor location for a heat pump dryer.

What do you do with the old dryer vent?
If you're replacing a vented dryer, the duct becomes an unused hole through your building envelope.
Do both ends:
Interior: cap the duct opening or seal it. If the wall is being finished, closing it up properly is better still.
Exterior: seal or remove the exterior termination. The damper on an unused vent hood will eventually stick open, at which point you have an open path for outside air and for pests — birds, rodents and insects all use dryer vents.

Stacking and tight spaces
Placement flexibility is the main reason people choose ventless, so:
Stacking. Confirm the specific dryer supports stacking with your specific washer, and use the manufacturer's stacking kit. Improvised stacking is unstable — a spinning washer produces real forces.
Closet installs. Check clearances and door type. A louvered or undercut door helps with the heat rejection.
Under-counter and interior rooms. Now possible, since there's no duct run. Confirm clearances and drain access.
Level the machine. As with any laundry appliance — an unlevel dryer is noisy and wears unevenly.
What circuit does a ventless dryer need?
Many heat pump dryers run on a standard 120V circuit, which is a major part of their appeal for electrification. Some larger models use 240V.
Check the specific model's requirement, and check whether it wants a dedicated circuit rather than sharing a general-purpose one. A heat pump dryer draws considerably more than the small load a gas dryer's controls used, so the existing laundry outlet may need attention.

First-cycle setup
- Run a test cycle and confirm the condensate path works — check for leaks at the drain hose or that the reservoir fills as expected
- Expect a longer cycle than you're used to
- Check the lint filter after the first load; heat pump dryers often have a two-stage filter arrangement
- Locate the condenser filter and note the manufacturer's cleaning schedule now, while you're reading the manual
That last one matters. The condenser filter is the maintenance item people skip, and skipping it makes cycles progressively longer and clothes come out damp — which then gets blamed on the technology rather than the filter.
