Replacing a Gas Range with Electric: The Process

Converting a gas range to induction is three tasks: a new electrical circuit, a properly capped gas line, and the appliance swap. Only the first is a real project.

The cooking change is the easy half. The work is the 240 V circuit — a new breaker, a run to the kitchen, and panel capacity to support it — plus capping the gas line to code, which is a licensed job.

Step 1: Confirm the circuit is possible

Before buying anything.

Step 2: Install the circuit

A licensed electrician runs a dedicated 240V circuit from the panel to the range location, terminating in either a receptacle or a junction box for hardwiring — whichever the appliance requires.

Points to settle in advance:

  • Receptacle position. The appliance's installation manual specifies where the receptacle can be so it doesn't foul the range body. Getting this wrong means the range won't sit flush.

  • Cord kit. Frequently sold separately from the appliance. Confirm before install day.

Step 3: Cap the gas line

This is licensed work. A plumber or gas fitter shuts off the supply, disconnects the appliance connector, and installs a proper cap on the piping. It's normally permitted and inspected.

Two things worth asking for:

A proper cap, not just a closed valve. A shutoff valve is a control device, not a permanent termination. Current practice for an abandoned outlet is capping the piping.

Consider whether to remove the branch entirely. If nothing will ever use that line again, removing the branch back to a tee is cleaner than leaving a capped stub in the wall. Costs a bit more, avoids questions at future inspections.

Do not do this yourself. Gas work is where DIY mistakes are dangerous rather than merely non-compliant.

Step 4: Check the fit

Standard range widths are consistent, so a same-width swap usually drops in. What to verify:

  • Depth and height against the appliance spec
  • Receptacle location relative to the range body — the manual shows the acceptable zone
  • The capped gas stub — make sure it and any shutoff don't intrude into the space the range needs
  • Anti-tip bracket — required on freestanding ranges and commonly missing in older kitchens. Install it.
  • Counter cutout for a cooktop, which may differ from the old one

Step 5: Ventilation

A common misconception is that induction removes the need for a range hood. It reduces one reason for it, not all of them.

What goes away: combustion byproducts. A gas range releases these into the kitchen unless a ducted hood is present and used. See gas stove indoor air quality.

What doesn't: cooking itself still produces grease, steam, smoke and particulates. Searing, frying and high-heat cooking all need extraction regardless of the heat source.

So keep ventilating. An existing ducted hood generally works fine. If you're renovating, a ducted hood vented outside remains the right answer — a recirculating hood filters grease but doesn't remove moisture or fine particulates.

Step 6: Adjust to cooking

Practical differences in the first weeks:

  • Boiling is much faster. Watch pots you'd previously walk away from.

  • The surface stays cooler, but a hot pan still heats the glass beneath it.
  • Lift pans rather than sliding them, to protect the glass.
  • Some buzzing with lighter pans at high power is normal.

Sequencing with other work

If a kitchen renovation is planned, do the circuit then. Cheapest by a wide margin.

If a panel upgrade is happening, run the range circuit at the same time even if the range is years away. The trip charge and permit are largely fixed costs.

Realistic timeline

  • Electrician quote and permit: days to a couple of weeks depending on jurisdiction
  • Circuit installation: typically most of a day, longer if fishing through finished walls
  • Gas capping: a short visit
  • Appliance delivery and install: an afternoon
  • Inspection: depends on local scheduling

The appliance swap is the easy part. The circuit and the permit set the pace.
