Induction Cooktop Electrical Requirements

The circuit is the real cost of switching a kitchen from gas to induction. The appliance is a normal appliance purchase; the 240V circuit that a gas kitchen never needed is the part that requires an electrician, a permit, and possibly panel work.
Induction circuit requirements

Always size from the appliance nameplate, not the burner count — manufacturers differ. Most full-size induction cooktops need a dedicated 240 V circuit, which is the item that turns a cooktop swap into electrical work.
What does the appliance need?
Induction cooktops and ranges require a dedicated 240V circuit, sized to the appliance's nameplate rating.
That rating varies considerably:
- Cooktop width — a 36-inch unit with five elements draws more than a 30-inch with four
- Range vs cooktop — a range includes an oven, adding load
- Feature set — bridge elements and high-power boost functions raise the peak
Because of that variation, the manufacturer's installation instructions are the authority. They state the required circuit ampacity, and listed equipment must be installed per its instructions. Sizing from a general rule of thumb is how people end up with an undersized circuit and an appliance that trips its breaker under load.
Get the model's installation manual before the electrician quotes — it's usually available on the manufacturer's site, and it turns a guess into a specification.
Dedicated means dedicated
The circuit serves the cooking appliance and nothing else. No sharing with countertop receptacles, no piggybacking the microwave.

Breaker and conductor sizing
The overcurrent device must protect the conductors, and both must suit the load. The relationships between breaker size, conductor size, insulation type and installation conditions come from the NEC tables — your electrician applies them to your specific run.
Two things that push conductor size up beyond the minimum:
- Long runs, where voltage drop becomes a consideration
- Installation conditions — high ambient temperature or many current-carrying conductors sharing a raceway

Receptacle or hardwired
Both are common:

Cooktops are more often hardwired directly, since they're built into the counter and never move.
The manufacturer's instructions specify which the appliance is designed for, including whether a cord kit is required and what configuration. Note that cord kits are frequently sold separately from the appliance — worth confirming before install day.
Reusing an existing electric range circuit
If the kitchen already has an electric range on a 240V circuit, you may be able to reuse it. Check three things:
- Ampacity — does the existing breaker and conductor size meet or exceed what the new appliance requires? Don't assume; a new induction range can require more than an old radiant one.
- Receptacle configuration — does it match the new appliance's cord? Older kitchens may have a three-wire configuration where current practice is four-wire.
- Condition — an old receptacle that's been cycled and heated for decades may be due for replacement anyway.
If the existing circuit is smaller than required, it needs to be replaced, not just re-terminated.
Converting from a gas kitchen
This is the common electrification case, and it means a new circuit from the panel.
The cost drivers are the same as any circuit run:
- Distance from the panel to the kitchen
- What the run passes through — unfinished basement or attic is easy; finished, insulated walls are not
- Whether the kitchen is being renovated — enormously cheaper with walls and cabinets open

Panel capacity
A cooking appliance is a meaningful addition to a load calculation. Before committing:

Permits and inspection
Adding a 240V branch circuit is permitted work in most jurisdictions. The inspector checks that the equipment is listed, that breaker and conductors match, that the circuit is dedicated, that grounding is correct, that terminations are torqued properly, and that the load calculation supports the addition.
