The fireplace is frequently the last gas appliance in an otherwise electrified home, and it's the one that keeps the meter — and its fixed monthly charge — in place. Which makes converting it a financial decision about the gas account rather than about the fireplace itself.

An electric fireplace is a 1,500-watt space heater with a light show — fine for ambience and taking the chill off one room, not a heating system. A gas fireplace is genuine heat, at the cost of venting and a gas line.
Be clear about what the fireplace does
Two very different cases:

Electric fireplace options
Electric inserts are designed to fit into an existing fireplace opening. Flame effects vary widely in quality, and most include a heater element for supplemental warmth.
Freestanding electric stoves sit in front of or near the old opening.
Built-in linear units are usually a renovation choice rather than a straight swap.
What they provide: appearance, a supplemental heater, no combustion, no venting, no gas line, and operation with a wall switch or remote.
What they don't: the heat output of a substantial gas unit, and any operation during a power outage.
How much heat does an electric fireplace produce?
Most electric fireplaces plug into a standard 120V outlet, which is the main practical appeal — no electrician needed.
The limit is straightforward: a 120V circuit can only supply so much, so the heat output of a plug-in electric fireplace is modest. It will take the chill off a room; it won't replace a substantial heating appliance.
Two cautions:
- Larger units may require a dedicated circuit. Check the model.
- A heater on a shared circuit trips breakers. If the outlet also serves entertainment equipment, lamps and other loads, running the heater may exceed the circuit. This is a common complaint and it's a circuit problem, not a product defect.

What happens to the gas line when you remove a fireplace?
Licensed work. A plumber or gas fitter shuts off the supply, disconnects the appliance, and properly caps the piping. Normally permitted and inspected.

What do you do with the flue after removing a gas fireplace?
This is the step people skip.
A gas fireplace has a venting arrangement — a chimney, a direct-vent terminal through the wall, or a B-vent. Once the appliance is gone, that becomes an unused opening through the building envelope.
Left alone, an open flue is:
- An air leakage path, and a substantial one — a chimney is essentially a hole from your living space to the sky
- A water entry point if the cap or crown deteriorates
- A pest entry — birds, bats, squirrels and insects all use disused flues

What do you lose switching to an electric fireplace?
Two honest losses:
Outage operation. Many gas fireplaces — particularly millivolt-controlled units — operate without electricity, which makes them a genuine emergency heat source. An electric fireplace does not.
