Breaker Brand Compatibility: Fitting Isn't Listed

The rule is simple to state: a breaker must be listed for use in the specific panel it goes into. The complication is that breakers from different manufacturers frequently fit each other's panels perfectly well, which makes the rule feel arbitrary.
It isn't.

The failure mode is not usually dramatic — it is a stab connection that runs slightly hot for years. Read the label inside the panel door before buying anything.
Why fit doesn't equal compatibility
A breaker connects to the panel's bus bar through a stab — a clip or blade that grips the bus. The connection carries the circuit's full current through a contact area of a few square millimeters.
Manufacturers design that interface as a system: the stab geometry, the clamping force, the plating, and the bus thickness are matched to each other and tested together.
A breaker from another manufacturer may physically seat while making partial contact — less surface area, or less clamping pressure than the bus was designed for. The result is a higher-resistance connection.
Higher resistance under load means heat. Heat degrades the plating and the spring temper of the stab. That raises resistance further. This is the same failure cycle that made Zinsco panels notorious, and it can be created in a perfectly good panel by putting the wrong breaker in it.
What does the NEC say about breaker compatibility?
The NEC requires listed equipment to be installed and used in accordance with its listing and instructions. A panel's listing specifies which breakers it was evaluated with. Installing others puts the panel outside its listing.
Practically, that means:
- An inspector will fail it
- An insurer may raise it after a loss
- A home inspector will note it at sale
Classified breakers
Some manufacturers produce classified breakers — units tested by a laboratory for use in specified panels made by other companies. They exist precisely because so many older panels are still in service with breakers that are hard to source.
The complication is that several panel manufacturers state that using another company's breaker voids their panel's listing, regardless of the classification. Jurisdictions differ on whose position wins, and inspectors differ on whether they'll accept them.
If you're considering one, ask your local inspector first. The answer is jurisdiction-specific and it's a two-minute phone call.
Reading your panel label
Open the outer door. The label — inside the door or on the deadfront — states:
- Manufacturer and catalog number of the panel
- Acceptable breaker types, by catalog number or series
- Maximum spaces and maximum circuits
- Tandem-permitted positions, often as a diagram
- Maximum breaker ratings for particular positions
Photograph it and keep the photo. It answers most breaker questions before you have them, and it's the document an electrician will want to see.
Obsolete panels
Some panels can no longer be supplied with new listed breakers at all. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco are the well-known cases, but there are others where a manufacturer has simply discontinued a line.
A panel you can't buy listed breakers for is functionally at the end of its life, even if nothing is wrong with it today. Adding circuits to one, or replacing a failed breaker with a used one of unknown history, are both bad investments.
Reconditioned and secondhand breakers circulate for obsolete panels. A used breaker has an unknown number of trip operations behind it and an unknown thermal history, in a device whose protective function depends on both. It's a poor substitute in a device whose entire purpose is to work correctly the one time it's needed.
Practical rules
- Read the panel label before buying anything.
- Match the catalog series, not just the amperage and the shape.

- Don't mix brands because the store was out of the right one.
- If listed breakers aren't available, that's a reason to plan a panel replacement, not a reason to improvise.
