Our verdict

Wallbox and Emporia are the two with a real answer for tight panels. Wallbox's version is more configurable and OCPP-open; Emporia's is cheaper and ties into whole-home monitoring. Either beats a four-figure service upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

A dedicated two-pole 60 A breaker on a 208/240 V circuit for the full 48 A. Wallbox requires the breaker to be 125% of the charging current. The installer sets the current on a rotary selector in the charger: 16 A (20 A breaker), 20 A (25 A), 24 A (30 A), 32 A (40 A), 40 A (50 A) or 48 A (60 A). Wallbox specifies copper wire only, and the app can lower the limit further, from 6 A in 1 A steps.
