Heat Pump Refrigerants Explained: R-410A, R-454B and R-32

If you're buying a heat pump now, you'll see refrigerants you may not recognize. Here's what changed and what it means.
Why it changed
Refrigerants are measured by global warming potential (GWP) — their warming effect relative to CO₂ over 100 years.

The US AIM Act mandates a stepped phasedown of high-GWP hydrofluorocarbons, and residential air conditioning and heat pump equipment has moved accordingly. This is a manufacturing transition, not a ban on existing systems.
What does A2L mean?
R-454B and R-32 are classified A2L — low toxicity, mildly flammable.
That classification is real and it drives requirements, but proportion matters: A2L is a much lower hazard class than A3 refrigerants like propane. Ignition requires specific concentrations and an ignition source, and equipment is engineered around this.
Practical consequences for a residential install:
- Leak detection built into equipment, which can shut down the system and run the fan to disperse a leak
- Charge limits based on the volume of the room an indoor unit serves — this occasionally affects where a mini split head can go
- Different service tools and procedures, and technician training
- Storage and transport rules for contractors
None of this changes how the system operates day to day. It does mean the installer needs to be current, which is worth asking about.
If you own R-410A equipment
Your system is fine. It keeps running, and it can still be serviced.
What's changing is the economics of servicing it:
- R-410A production is being phased down, so supply tightens and prices rise over time
- Reclaimed and recycled refrigerant remains available, which softens this
- The trajectory looks like R-22's did — gradually more expensive rather than suddenly unavailable
The practical decision this affects: a system with a significant leak. Repeatedly recharging an aging R-410A system gets progressively more expensive, and at some point replacement wins. That crossover arrives sooner than it used to.

No retrofits
You cannot convert an R-410A system to R-454B or R-32.
Different refrigerants have different operating pressures, require different lubricants, and — for A2L — need components rated for mild flammability plus the associated safety features. The compressor, expansion device, and controls are all matched to the refrigerant.
This also matters when reusing a line set during a replacement. Existing lines can sometimes be reused if they're the right size and in good condition, but they must be thoroughly cleaned of the old oil, and compatibility has to be confirmed. Ask specifically — a reused line set with residual incompatible oil is a slow compressor failure.
What to ask when buying
- Which refrigerant does this equipment use?
- Is your team trained and equipped for A2L? If it's an A2L system, this is not optional.
- Are there charge-limit implications for the indoor unit locations in my house? Relevant for mini splits in small rooms.
- If reusing my line set, how is compatibility being confirmed?
Does refrigerant choice affect efficiency?
Marginally, and it isn't the number to shop on. R-32 and R-454B have somewhat different thermodynamic properties from R-410A, and manufacturers have designed equipment around them.
What determines your bill is the equipment's rated efficiency — SEER2 and HSPF2 — its capacity at your design temperature, and the quality of the installation. Refrigerant type is a compliance and serviceability question, not a performance selling point.

Handling and the law
Venting refrigerant is illegal. Recovery, recycling, and disposal require EPA Section 608 certification, and that applies to A2L refrigerants as much as to R-410A.

Code editions and local amendments vary. Confirm the adopted edition with your AHJ, and treat manufacturer instructions as governing wherever they are more restrictive.
