Propane runtime is set by tank size — up to a point. In cold weather, how fast the tank can vaporize fuel can limit you before the amount of fuel does.
What size propane tank does a generator need?

The jump from cylinders to permanent tanks is where standby installations live. A cylinder measured in hours isn't a standby fuel supply.
How long will a propane tank run a generator?
Roughly: tank capacity ÷ hourly consumption = hours.
Consumption depends on generator size and load, and manufacturers publish it — usually in gallons or pounds per hour at specified load points. Use those figures rather than a general table, and remember the 80% fill rule means usable capacity is below nominal.

Why is a propane tank only filled to 80%?
Propane tanks are filled to about 80% of volume, not full.
Liquid propane expands with temperature. The vapor space above the liquid accommodates that expansion. Fill beyond roughly 80% and a warm day can push liquid into the relief valve, which then discharges.
Practical consequence: a "500 gallon" tank holds about 400 gallons of usable propane. Size accordingly rather than planning against the nominal figure.
Why does propane struggle in cold weather?
The part people miss.
Propane must vaporize from liquid to gas before the engine can burn it. That happens at the liquid surface inside the tank, and the rate depends on:
- Temperature — colder means slower
- Wetted surface area — a larger tank vaporizes faster
- Liquid level — a fuller tank has more wetted surface
So in deep cold with a low tank, a generator can starve for fuel while the tank still contains propane. The fuel is there; it can't vaporize fast enough.
Mitigations:
- Use a larger tank rather than several small ones — more surface area
- Keep tanks reasonably full in winter
- Multiple cylinders manifolded together, for portable setups, share the vaporization load
- Don't rely on a 20 lb cylinder in severe cold
This is a genuine failure mode during winter storms, which is exactly when you'd be running.
Placement
Propane tank placement is regulated, and the rules exist for good reason. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and tank size, but generally involve:
- Setbacks from buildings, property lines, and openings
- Distance from ignition sources
- Access for delivery vehicles
- A stable base — permanent tanks need proper support
- Distance from the generator itself

Should you own or lease a propane tank?
Leasing is common: the supplier owns and maintains the tank, and you buy propane from them. Lower upfront cost, but you're generally tied to that supplier and their pricing.

Ask about contract terms, price adjustment mechanisms, and whether pre-buy or budget plans are offered.
Portable generator setups
For a portable dual-fuel generator, the practical arrangement:
- A 20 lb cylinder is convenient and familiar but short — hours, not days
- A 40 or 100 lb cylinder extends runtime meaningfully. A 100 lb cylinder is heavy when full and not easily moved
- Multiple cylinders with a changeover regulator let you swap without stopping, and help with cold-weather vaporization
- Check the regulator and hose are rated for your generator's demand — an undersized regulator starves the engine
Before storm season
- Tank filled — don't wait for the forecast; delivery queues form fast
- Level checked on the gauge
- Regulator and connections inspected for leaks (soapy water, no flame)
- Spare cylinders filled, if portable
- Delivery access clear of snow or obstructions
