Dual Fuel Inverter Generator: How They Work

A dual-fuel generator runs on gasoline or propane. Tri-fuel adds natural gas. The flexibility costs a premium and a little output, and for storm preparedness it's usually worth both.
The core argument: storage
This is the reason dual-fuel exists, and it's about the fuel you have when the outage starts.
Gasoline degrades. Modern pump gasoline with ethanol begins deteriorating within months. It absorbs moisture, forms gum deposits, and clogs carburetors — and stale fuel is far and away the most common reason a generator won't start when it's finally needed. See gasoline storage and stabilizer.
Propane doesn't. It stores indefinitely in a sealed tank with no stabilizer, no degradation, and no gum. A tank filled five years ago is as good as one filled yesterday.
For a machine that sits unused for a year and then must start immediately, that difference matters enormously.
It also burns cleaner, which means fewer carburetor problems and less maintenance generally.
The output penalty
Propane has lower energy density in the engine, so you get roughly 10% less output than on gasoline. Manufacturers publish both figures.
A generator rated 7,500 W on gasoline might be around 6,750 W on propane.

Natural gas deserves a note: output drops further, but the supply is effectively unlimited and typically keeps running during electrical outages. That combination is why standby generators are usually natural gas where it's available. It requires a permanent gas connection — which means a plumber, a permit, and a generator that stays put. The gasoline problem in an outage
Worth stating plainly, because it changes preparedness planning: gas station pumps need electricity.
In a widespread outage, stations without backup power can't dispense fuel, and the ones that can develop long queues quickly. Refuelling a gasoline generator on day three of a regional outage is not a reliable plan.
Propane you already own is available regardless.
Propane's weakness: cold
Propane vaporizes less readily at low temperature, and vapor pressure in the tank falls as it empties and as it gets colder. In deep cold with a nearly empty tank, a generator can starve for fuel.
Mitigations: keep tanks reasonably full in winter, use larger tanks (more surface area for vaporization), and don't rely on a small cylinder in extreme cold.

Runtime and tanks
Propane runtime depends entirely on tank size:

Many dual-fuel portables ship with a hose for a standard 20 lb cylinder. Multiple cylinders, or a larger tank with an appropriate regulator, extend runtime considerably.

Is the premium worth it?
Usually yes, if:
- The generator will sit unused between outages — which describes most of them
- You want fuel that's guaranteed available without a trip to a station
- You already have propane on site for a grill, a fireplace, or heating
- You want fewer carburetor problems over the machine's life
Probably not, if:
- You use the generator regularly, so gasoline never sits long enough to degrade
- You need maximum output per dollar and will run gasoline anyway
- Deep-cold operation is the primary use case
Conversion kits
Kits exist to convert a gasoline generator to propane or tri-fuel. They vary in quality, may affect emissions compliance, and frequently void the manufacturer's warranty.
If fuel flexibility matters, a factory dual-fuel unit is the safer purchase. The premium over a comparable gasoline-only model is usually modest relative to the total.
