How to Check a Used EV's Battery Health

Battery state of health (SoH) — the pack's current usable capacity as a share of its original capacity — is the single most useful number when buying a used EV. It sets the car's real range, it's the biggest financial variable, and unlike most used-car risks, it's measurable before you hand over money.

There's no vehicle-history-report line for it, so you have to go get it. This guide covers four methods, how to read the result, and what conditions will distort your measurement if you're not careful.

Can the car tell you its battery health?

Fastest, and the place to start.

Many EVs expose capacity or state of health somewhere in the vehicle — a service menu, a diagnostics screen, a battery information page, or the manufacturer's owner app. Availability and presentation vary widely by brand and model year: some show a percentage, some show usable kWh, some show only an estimated range.

What to do:

  • Look up where your specific model reports it before the viewing, so you're not fumbling in the car.
  • Photograph the screen with the odometer visible in the same session if possible.
  • Note the charge level and ambient temperature when you take the reading.

Caveats: some in-car figures are smoothed or conservative, and an estimated-range display is not a state-of-health reading — it's a prediction based on recent driving. Treat this as one input, not the answer.

How do you range-test a used EV battery?

Crude but genuinely informative, and it needs no tools.

  1. Charge to a known, repeatable state — a full charge if the car and seller allow, otherwise a specific percentage.
  2. Note the indicated range at that charge level.
  3. Compare against the model's original EPA rating, scaled to the same charge percentage.

A car rated 250 miles at 100% that shows roughly 220 at 100% suggests something in the region of 12% capacity loss. That's a rough proxy, not a measurement, because the indicated range is influenced by recent driving efficiency.

Conditions that will skew the result:

  • Recent driving style. Range estimators learn from recent trips; a week of highway driving lowers the estimate on the same pack.
  • Wheel and tire changes, roof racks, and heavy loads all affect efficiency and therefore the estimate.
  • Climate settings at the time of the reading.

Can you read EV battery health with an OBD scanner?

The most direct measurement available to a private buyer.

Most EVs expose pack data — cell voltages, usable capacity, sometimes a calculated SoH — over the OBD-II port. Reading it requires:

  • An OBD-II adapter (a basic Bluetooth or Wi-Fi dongle is usually enough), and
  • A model-specific app that knows how to interpret that manufacturer's data.

Generic code readers won't do it; the parameters are manufacturer-specific. Apps exist for many popular models, and EV owner communities maintain guidance on which tool works for which vehicle.

What good data gives you:

  • Usable capacity in kWh, comparable against the original spec — the cleanest possible SoH figure
  • Cell voltage spread. A wide imbalance between the highest and lowest cells is a warning sign independent of total capacity
  • Stored fault codes relating to the high-voltage system or thermal management
  • Fast-charge counts on some models, indicating how the car was used

Ask the seller's permission before plugging anything in. Most private sellers are fine with it; a seller who refuses without a reason has told you something.

Method 4: A third-party battery health report

Several independent services produce a standardized battery health report from the vehicle's data, typically delivered by an app session or through a participating shop. Advantages: a consistent methodology, a document you can keep, and something you can point at in a negotiation. Worth the cost on a purchase this size, and the only realistic option if you can't get diagnostic access yourself.

What is a good EV battery state of health?

Don't apply a universal threshold. There isn't one. Interpret relatively:

Two anchors help:

  • Loss is front-loaded. Lithium-ion packs typically lose a larger share of capacity in the earlier years and then decline more slowly. A three-year-old car showing modest loss and a seven-year-old car showing somewhat more can both be perfectly normal.
  • The question that actually matters is fitness for purpose. A pack at reduced capacity is a problem only if the remaining range doesn't cover how you'll actually drive. Work out your real daily need, then judge the car against it.

What drives degradation

Useful context when you're interpreting a reading and asking the seller questions:

  • Heat. Sustained high temperatures are hard on lithium-ion cells. A car that lived in a hot climate without garaging, or one frequently parked at high state of charge in heat, may show more loss.
  • Time itself. Calendar aging happens regardless of use, which is why a low-mileage older car isn't automatically better than a higher-mileage newer one.
  • Frequent DC fast charging. Generally harder on a pack than AC charging, though thermal management mitigates it and the effect varies by model.
  • Habitual 100% or near-0% storage. Sitting at extremes for long periods is harder on cells than staying in a mid range. See charging to 100 percent.
  • Cycles. More total energy through the pack means more wear — which is why mileage correlates with, but doesn't fully determine, SoH.

Using the result

In negotiation. A measured deficit against typical is a documented, defensible reason to adjust price. Bring the report, not an opinion.

In risk assessment. Cross-check the reading against remaining battery warranty. The bottom line

State of health is measurable, and you should measure it — ideally two ways — before buying any used EV. Read the car's own reporting, run a controlled range comparison in fair conditions, and back both up with OBD data or a third-party report.
