"How many miles is too many?" is the standard used-car question, and on an EV it's largely the wrong one. The components that make a high-mileage gas car risky — the engine, the transmission, the exhaust, the brake system taking every stop — either don't exist on an EV or wear far more slowly.
What replaces the question is more specific: what's the battery's state of health, what warranty remains, and how has the chassis held up? A 90,000-mile EV with a healthy pack and coverage left can be a far better purchase than a 35,000-mile one with a degraded pack and none.
Why does mileage matter less on an EV?

What still wears with miles on an EV:

Does age or mileage age an EV battery more?
Battery degradation happens through two independent mechanisms, and this is why an odometer reading alone tells you so little:
Cycle aging tracks energy through the pack, which roughly tracks miles. More miles, more cycles, more wear.
Calendar aging happens regardless of whether the car moves. Cells degrade over time, and the rate depends heavily on temperature and on the state of charge the pack sits at. A car parked at high charge in a hot climate ages faster than one kept at moderate charge in a garage — even at zero miles.

What should you check instead of EV mileage?
1. Measured battery state of health. The number that actually matters. Compare it against what's typical for that model at that age and mileage — not against a made-up threshold. A car in line with its peers is fine; one well below deserves either a large discount or a walk.
2. Remaining battery and powertrain warranty. Verify by VIN with a franchised dealer. EV battery warranties run on long time-and-mileage terms and typically follow the vehicle. 3. Charging history. Near-exclusive DC fast charging is generally harder on a pack than overnight AC charging, and long periods parked at very high or very low charge are harder than mid-range storage. Ask. Then let the measured state of health be the verdict.
4. Service and recall history. Fewer entries than a gas car, but tire replacements, brake fluid service, coolant service, high-voltage work, and completed recalls all matter. Open recalls should be addressed before purchase.

How to think about remaining life
An EV battery doesn't fail at a threshold; it gradually delivers less range. So the practical question isn't "how long will it last" but "will its remaining range suit how I drive?"
Work it backward:
- What's your real daily requirement? Most drivers need far less than they think — commute plus errands, with home charging overnight.

- What will it be in a few years? Degradation continues, more slowly. Leave headroom.
- What happens on the occasional long trip? More stops, or a different vehicle for those days.

When does high mileage matter on an EV?
Not a free pass. High miles on an EV genuinely matter for:
- Battery cycling, in aggregate — a lot of energy has moved through the pack, and it will read lower than a comparable low-mileage car all else equal.
- Warranty exhaustion. Coverage has a mileage limit as well as a time limit, and hitting it removes your protection against the one expensive failure mode.
- Suspension and chassis wear, which is where high-mileage EVs actually cost money.

The market prices used EVs largely on age and mileage, but the actual risk sits in state of health and warranty. That gap is where the opportunity is:
- A high-mileage car with a strong SoH reading is often underpriced relative to its real condition — and it's a legitimate negotiating position when the reading is documented.
- A low-mileage car with a weak SoH reading is overpriced relative to its real condition, and the odometer is doing the misleading.
