GFCI Breaker vs Outlet: Which One Should You Install?

Both devices provide the same core protection: they compare current out against current back and trip at roughly 5 milliamps of imbalance, fast enough to prevent electrocution.
The choice between them is about cost, coverage, and where you want the reset button.
GFCI receptacle
A receptacle with TEST and RESET buttons, installed in the box like any other outlet.
What it protects: itself, plus everything wired downstream of it on that circuit — if the downstream devices are connected to its LOAD terminals.
Reset location: right there, where you were standing when it tripped.
Cost: considerably less than a GFCI breaker.
Best for: the common case. Bathrooms, kitchen counters, garages, outdoor receptacles — anywhere the protected thing is a receptacle and the first receptacle on the run is easy to reach.
GFCI breaker
A breaker with a TEST button, installed in the panel. Usually has a white pigtail that lands on the neutral bar.
What it protects: the entire circuit — every device on it and the wiring between them.
Reset location: at the panel.
Cost: several times a GFCI receptacle.
Best for: hardwired equipment, inaccessible first devices, and circuits where you want the branch wiring protected too.

When only a breaker works
Hardwired equipment. A dishwasher, a well pump, a hot tub, an air conditioner. There's no receptacle to install a GFCI device into, so protection has to come from the panel.
The first device is inaccessible. If the first box on the circuit is behind an appliance or in a finished ceiling, protecting from the panel avoids the problem.
240-volt circuits. Recent code cycles have extended GFCI requirements to certain 240-volt outlets and equipment. Two-pole GFCI breakers handle these.
You want the wiring protected. A receptacle protects downstream of itself. A breaker protects from the panel outward, including the cable run.
When is a receptacle the better choice?
Cost, on a single location. One bathroom, one garage receptacle, one outdoor outlet — the receptacle is much cheaper.
Convenient resets. A GFCI that trips on a wet outdoor receptacle is easier to reset ten feet away than in the basement.
Retrofitting an ungrounded circuit. The NEC permits replacing an ungrounded receptacle with a GFCI, marked "No Equipment Ground" and, where applicable, "GFCI Protected". This is the standard legitimate answer for old two-wire circuits — and it's why a bootleg ground is never necessary.
Panel positions are tight. A GFCI receptacle uses none.
Wiring one to protect others
A GFCI receptacle has two sets of terminals:
- LINE — the supply from the panel
- LOAD — everything downstream you want protected
Connect downstream receptacles to LOAD and they're covered. Connect them to LINE and they aren't — they're simply on the same circuit with no protection.
This is the most common GFCI wiring error, and it produces an outlet that appears protected because it's on a circuit with a GFCI in it. Downstream receptacles should be labeled "GFCI Protected", both because it's required in some situations and because it tells the next person where the reset button is.
Don't mix them unnecessarily
A GFCI receptacle fed by a GFCI breaker gives you two devices in series doing the same job. It's not dangerous, but it makes troubleshooting confusing — a trip could be either device, and you'll be walking between the panel and the outlet to find out.
Pick one per circuit.
Testing
Whichever you use, press TEST monthly. It should trip and cut power. Press RESET.
