Panels last 25–30 years and asphalt shingles typically 20–25. If those clocks are not aligned, align them before the array goes up — paying to remove and reinstall an array mid-life is entirely avoidable.

  • Age and material, against typical service life for your climate
  • Visible condition — granule loss, curling, cracking, previous repairs
  • Number of existing layers, which affects whether a tear-off is required
  • Any known leaks or repairs
  • Storm history

Don't let optimism decide this. A roof with a few years left is not a roof to put a 25-year array on.

What does the process involve?

If it has to happen:

  1. The solar company disconnects and de-energizes the system — this is their work, not the roofer's
  2. Panels, racking and mounts are removed and stored
  3. The roofer replaces the roof, including the area under the array

Practical implications:

Two trades must coordinate. Scheduling gaps mean either a roof sitting exposed or panels stored longer than necessary.

The system is offline for the duration — lost production, though usually a modest amount.

Panels need safe storage — they're fragile and valuable.

Damage risk exists during handling. Ask who is responsible if a panel is damaged during removal or reinstallation.

New flashing should be used. Reusing old flashing on a new roof defeats the purpose.

Who does what

Ask before the work starts:

  • Does the original installer offer removal and reinstallation, and at what cost?
  • If they're no longer trading, who else will do it? Some solar companies won't touch another firm's installation.
