How to Cool a House Without Air Conditioning

Cooling without air conditioning is mostly about heat you never let in rather than heat you remove. That ordering matters, because the measures people reach for first — fans, interior blinds — are near the bottom of the effectiveness list.

The single largest lever is stopping sun getting in, because shading a window before the heat arrives beats removing that heat afterwards. Exterior shade outperforms interior blinds by a wide margin.

How much does exterior shading help?

The single largest lever, and it isn't close.

Solar gain through glass is typically the biggest cooling load in a house. Once sunlight passes through a window it becomes heat inside the room, and no interior treatment can un-do that — an interior blind absorbs the energy and re-radiates most of it into the space. Stopping the sun outside the glass is fundamentally more effective than blocking it inside.

Options, roughly in order of effect:

  • Exterior roller shades or solar screens — mounted outside the window, can reduce a large share of incoming solar energy while retaining some view
  • Awnings — very effective on south-facing glass, where the high summer sun is easily blocked while low winter sun still gets under
  • Shutters — traditional and effective
  • Deciduous trees and vines — shade in summer, bare branches admitting sun in winter. Slow, but the best long-term answer
  • Pergolas and overhangs on the sunny sides

Orientation matters. West-facing glass is the worst offender: late-afternoon sun is low, comes in nearly horizontally where overhangs can't block it, and arrives when the house is already at its hottest. Prioritise west, then east, then south.

2. Attic sealing and insulation

The second-biggest lever, and it works in winter too.

An unshaded attic gets extremely hot on a summer day, and that heat radiates and conducts down through the ceiling into your top floor. Two fixes:

Passive attic ventilation — clear soffit vents with baffles, plus ridge or roof vents — lets hot air escape without any running cost. Powered attic fans are usually a poor idea over an unsealed ceiling, because they pull conditioned air up out of the house. See Attic fan vs whole house fan.

What is night flushing?

Where night air is cooler than indoor air, use it.

The routine:

  • Evening: open windows on opposite sides of the house for cross-ventilation. Air exchanges far faster with two openings than one.
  • Overnight: let cool air displace the day's accumulated heat, cooling the building structure as well as the air.
  • Morning, before it warms up: close everything — windows, blinds, curtains. Trap what you gained.

Where it fails: humid climates where night lows stay high and the air is moist. Pulling in humid air makes the house feel worse and loads your AC when you do run it.

How should you use fans to cool a house?

Fans cool people, not rooms. Moving air increases evaporative and convective heat loss from your skin, which can make you feel several degrees cooler with no change in air temperature. That's a real effect and it's cheap.

The corollary: a fan in an empty room does nothing except add a trickle of motor heat. Turn them off when you leave.

  • Ceiling fans — run counterclockwise in summer to push air down. Details and running cost in do ceiling fans save money.
  • Box or window fans — can be used to exhaust hot air out on the warm side of the house while drawing cooler air in on the other.

What makes a house hotter from inside?

Everything that uses energy indoors ends up as heat in the house.

  • Cook outside, or use a microwave, air fryer or induction hob rather than an oven on hot days. Induction puts far less waste heat into the kitchen than gas or radiant electric — see induction vs gas cooking.
  • Run the range hood when you do cook, vented outside.
  • Run the dishwasher and dryer at night, or line-dry.
  • Switch remaining incandescent and halogen lighting to LED. Old bulbs are effectively small heaters.
  • Unplug or turn off unused electronics. Standby loads are small individually and continuous.
  • Move heat-producing equipment — a desktop computer, a second refrigerator in a hot garage — out of living space where possible.

6. Humidity

At the same temperature, drier air feels cooler, because your body sheds heat by evaporation and humid air slows that down.

7. Thermal mass, used deliberately

Heavy materials — masonry, tile, concrete — absorb heat slowly and release it slowly. That delays the peak indoor temperature relative to the outdoor one.

It only helps if you flush the stored heat at night. Mass with no night cooling just holds the day's heat into the evening, which is worse than no mass at all. Mass plus night flushing is a genuinely effective combination in climates with a large day-to-night temperature swing; mass in a humid climate with warm nights is a liability.

8. Evaporative cooling, in dry climates only

In dry climates an evaporative cooler ("swamp cooler") uses far less electricity than refrigerant air conditioning. It adds humidity, which is exactly why it only works where the air is dry — and it needs a steady supply of outside air, so windows stay partly open.

How cool can you get a house without AC?

Passive measures reduce the cooling load — sometimes substantially. In a mild or dry climate with good shading and night flushing, they can eliminate the need for air conditioning entirely.

In a hot humid climate they will not replace AC, and pretending otherwise is a health risk during heat events. What they do there is reduce how hard and how long the AC runs, which is worth real money — and reduce the size of system you need when you replace it.

During extreme heat, prioritise safety. If passive measures aren't keeping the house safe, use air conditioning, go somewhere cooled, or use a cooling centre. Heat is dangerous, and there's no prize for enduring it.

The bottom line

Shade the glass from outside first — it's the biggest lever and everything else is a distant second. Then seal and insulate the attic, flush the house with cool night air where the climate allows and close it up in the morning, and use fans on people rather than on empty rooms.
