Do Air Purifiers Actually Work?

Air purifiers are sold as a general answer to indoor air quality. They're not — they're a particulate tool, and they're a good one within that scope.

The clarity worth having up front:

  • Particles — dust, pollen, smoke, dander, many airborne pathogens carried on droplets: HEPA filtration genuinely works.
  • Gases and odours — VOCs, cooking smells: activated carbon helps, with real limits.
  • Carbon dioxide — the main driver of that stuffy feeling: no purifier does anything at all.

What do air purifier filter types actually remove?

HEPA. A mechanical filter meeting a defined efficiency standard for fine particles. This is the core of any purifier worth buying, and it's well-established technology — the particles physically can't get through. Look for genuine HEPA rather than "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like," which are marketing terms with no standard behind them.

Pre-filter. Catches hair and large debris so the HEPA filter isn't consumed by them. Usually washable. Cleaning it regularly extends the expensive filter's life considerably.

Activated carbon. Adsorbs gases, VOCs and odours. It genuinely works, but with two caveats: capacity is finite, and a thin carbon-impregnated sheet has very little of it. Meaningful gas removal needs meaningful carbon mass. Carbon saturates and then does nothing, silently — replace it on schedule.

UV-C. Marketed for pathogens. Effectiveness inside a consumer purifier depends heavily on intensity and contact time, and in most portable units the air moves past the lamp too quickly for much effect. The HEPA filter is doing the work.

Ionizers and electronic air cleaners. Charge particles so they clump and settle or stick to a collector plate. Some produce ozone, either deliberately or as a byproduct, and some generate other reaction products with indoor chemicals.

Ozone generators: don't. Ozone is a lung irritant, and health authorities advise against ozone-producing devices for air cleaning in occupied spaces. Any product marketed on "activated oxygen" or ozone output is one to avoid.

Safe default: HEPA plus activated carbon, no ozone.

What CADR do I need for my room?

Clean Air Delivery Rate combines filter efficiency and airflow into a single comparable number, tested separately for smoke, dust and pollen. It's the specification to compare.

A common sizing rule: choose a CADR at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet. A 300 sq ft room wants a smoke CADR of roughly 200 or more.

Two practical points:

  • Undersizing is the standard mistake. A small unit in a large room barely moves the needle. Buy for the room you'll actually use it in.
  • Run it on a lower speed on a larger unit rather than maxing out a small one — quieter and more effective for the same clean air delivered.

Air changes per hour is the other way to think about it: CADR relative to room volume. More changes per hour means faster reduction and a lower steady-state concentration.

When does an air purifier actually help?

Genuinely useful:

  • Wildfire smoke. One of the clearest cases — a well-sized HEPA unit in a closed room measurably reduces fine particulate.
  • Allergies. Pollen, dust mite debris and pet dander are particles, and reducing them in a bedroom is where people notice the most benefit.
  • Pet dander, in a room the pet uses.

  • Nearby outdoor sources — a busy road, industry, construction.

Where they don't help:

  • Stuffiness from CO2 — no effect whatsoever
  • Humidity — that's a dehumidifier's job; see cost to run a dehumidifier
  • Mould — a purifier may capture some airborne spores, but the fix is finding and eliminating the moisture source
  • Radon — a gas requiring mitigation, not filtration
  • Combustion gases including CO — a purifier does nothing. You need working CO alarms and proper venting; see smoke and CO alarm placement
  • Odours from an ongoing source — carbon masks the symptom while the source keeps producing

How much does an air purifier cost to run?

Two costs, and the second is the bigger one.

Electricity. Modest — a fan and controls. kWh = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours. A unit drawing 50 W continuously uses 1.2 kWh a day, which is a small line on a bill. Work out yours with the electricity cost calculator and project with the electricity bill estimator.

Filters. The real ongoing cost, and worth checking before you buy. HEPA filters typically need replacing annually or so, carbon more often, and prices vary widely between models. Check the replacement filter price and interval for the specific unit — a cheap purifier with expensive proprietary filters costs more over five years than a pricier one with reasonable consumables.

Wash the pre-filter regularly. It's free and it extends the expensive filter's life.

HVAC filtration treats all circulating air, but only while the blower runs — which in a well-sized system may be a minority of the hours. Running the blower continuously fixes that at the cost of electricity, cheaply with an ECM motor and less so with a PSC one.

And don't over-filter. A very high MERV rating in a system not designed for the pressure drop restricts airflow, which hurts efficiency, comfort and equipment life. Practical answer for most people: a reasonable HVAC filter the system can handle, plus a portable HEPA unit in the bedroom or the problem room.

Getting more from what you have

  • Put it in the room you occupy, especially the bedroom. Eight hours of sleep is where the exposure reduction matters most.
  • Close the door while it runs. It cleans the air in one space; a smaller space cleans faster.
  • Run it continuously on a low speed rather than intermittently on high.
  • Keep it clear of walls and furniture so the intake and outlet aren't blocked.
  • Wash the pre-filter monthly.
  • Replace filters on schedule. A saturated filter gives no warning.

The bottom line

A correctly sized HEPA purifier genuinely reduces airborne particles in the room it's in — that's real, well-established, and worth having for smoke, allergens and dander. It does nothing for carbon dioxide, humidity, radon or combustion gases, so it isn't a ventilation substitute. Size by CADR at roughly two-thirds of the room's square footage, stick to HEPA plus carbon and avoid ozone-producing devices, and check the replacement filter cost before buying rather than after.
