AC Short Cycling: Causes and Fixes

Short cycling is a system that starts, runs briefly, shuts off, and starts again soon after — often several times an hour. It's not just an annoyance:

  • Compressor wear. Starting draws a large inrush current and stresses components. Wear accumulates per start, not per hour.
  • Wasted electricity. Each start costs a surge, and the system never reaches its efficient steady state.
  • Poor humidity control. Dehumidification happens mostly during sustained run times. Short cycles leave the house cool and clammy.
  • Uneven temperatures, because air never circulates long enough to mix.

Work through the causes in order — the free ones first.

Oversizing is the cause most often missed, because it looks like good performance: the house hits temperature quickly. But short runs never dehumidify, so the room reads cool and feels clammy — and the compressor wears from repeated starts.

1. Dirty filter

The most common cause, and free to check.

A restricted filter starves the evaporator coil of airflow. The coil gets too cold, condensate freezes on it, the ice restricts airflow further, and the system trips on a safety or simply stops cooling. Pull the filter and look — if light doesn't pass through, replace it.

Also check:

  • Registers open, all of them. Closing registers in unused rooms doesn't save energy and does restrict airflow.
  • Returns unblocked by furniture or rugs.

2. Frozen evaporator coil

If the indoor coil is iced up, the system will cycle oddly and cool poorly. Symptoms include ice visible on the refrigerant lines, water around the air handler, and airflow that weakens then stops.

What to do: turn cooling off, set the fan to ON to thaw the coil (this takes hours, not minutes), replace the filter, and check every register and return. Once thawed, restart.

3. Thermostat placement or fault

A thermostat reading the wrong temperature makes the system behave strangely.

Bad locations:

  • In direct sunlight — reads high, so the system runs when it shouldn't and shuts off oddly
  • Above or near a supply register — reads the cold supply air, satisfies immediately, shuts off, then the room temperature reasserts itself and it restarts. Classic short-cycling cause.
  • On an exterior wall, near a door, or above a heat-producing appliance
  • In a hallway or closed room that isn't representative of the space

Also check:

  • Batteries — low batteries produce erratic behaviour
  • Cycle rate / anticipator settings, on thermostats that expose them
  • Loose wiring at the thermostat or the equipment
  • System type configured correctly on a recently replaced thermostat

4. Dirty condenser (outdoor unit)

The outdoor coil rejects heat. When it's blocked, head pressure rises and the system may trip on a high-pressure safety, then restart when pressure falls — a short-cycling pattern.

Check:

  • Fins clear of grass clippings, leaves, cottonwood fluff and dirt. Rinse gently from the inside out with a hose; don't use a pressure washer, which bends fins.
  • Clearance around the unit — manufacturers specify minimum distances. Fences, shrubs and stacked items block airflow.
  • The fan running when the compressor runs.

5. Low refrigerant

Refrigerant doesn't get consumed — if it's low, there's a leak. Low charge lowers coil temperature (freezing) and can trip low-pressure safeties, both of which produce cycling.

6. Electrical faults

Several components cause cycling when they fail:

  • A failing run capacitor — the compressor struggles to start, may start and stall
  • A failing contactor — intermittent connection
  • Loose or corroded connections

  • Low voltage at the equipment

Symptoms: humming without starting, lights dimming briefly when the unit tries to start, a breaker that trips occasionally.

This is technician territory — the outdoor unit contains capacitors that hold a charge even with power off.

Can an oversized AC be fixed?

If you've cleared everything above and the system still cycles frequently, it may simply be too big for the house.

What happens: an oversized unit drops the air temperature to setpoint quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off — before it has run long enough to remove much moisture from the air or to even out temperatures between rooms. Then the space warms slightly and it restarts.

The symptoms are distinctive:

  • Rapid cycles even with a clean filter and a well-placed thermostat
  • The house is cool but clammy — the giveaway. Poor dehumidification is the signature of oversizing
  • Noticeable temperature differences between rooms
  • Big swings around the setpoint

Why it happens: rule-of-thumb sizing that errs large, or a replacement matched to an already-oversized predecessor, or a system sized before the house was insulated and air sealed.

Partial mitigations in the meantime: a variable-speed or two-stage system can modulate down; a properly placed thermostat with a longer cycle setting helps a little; a dehumidifier addresses the comfort symptom without fixing the cause.

8. Duct problems

Undersized returns, leaking ducts, or a distribution problem can starve the system of airflow with a perfectly clean filter. Symptoms overlap with a dirty filter but don't respond to replacing it.

How do you diagnose AC short cycling?

  1. Filter — replace it
  2. Registers and returns — all open and unblocked
  3. Coil frozen? — thaw with fan only, then retest
  4. Thermostat — location, batteries, settings
  5. Outdoor unit — clean fins, adequate clearance, fan running
  6. Still cycling? — call a technician for refrigerant and electrical diagnosis
  7. Everything checks out and it still cycles, with a clammy house — suspect oversizing, and plan for correct sizing at replacement

How do you stop an AC from short cycling?

Start with the filter, the registers and the thermostat's location — those three account for a large share of short-cycling calls and cost nothing.
