Four powertrains, one framework. Whether an EV, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or conventional gas car costs you least depends less on the technology than on how many miles you drive and where you charge or fuel.

What are the differences between EV, hybrid and gas?

The critical distinction: a hybrid never plugs in and always burns gasoline. A PHEV can run on electricity for a limited range and then operates like a hybrid. Energy
Reduce everything to cost per mile:
- Gas: price per gallon ÷ MPG
- EV: electricity rate ÷ miles per kWh
Illustrative example. At $3.50/gallon:

The hybrid captures a large share of the gap for free — no charger, no install, no habit change. The EV goes further, but only on home charging. That last row is the whole argument: an EV run mostly on public fast charging loses most of its energy advantage.
A PHEV sits wherever your actual electric/gas split lands. Charge it nightly and do short trips, and it behaves like an EV. Never plug it in, and it behaves like a slightly worse hybrid, because it's carrying battery weight it isn't using.

The EV win here is structural: no oil, no spark plugs, no timing belt, no exhaust, no conventional transmission. Hybrids and PHEVs still carry all of that, and PHEVs carry electric hardware on top — more systems, more potential failure points.

Insurance

Up-front price
Broadly, hybrids carry a modest premium over the equivalent gas car, PHEVs more, and BEVs the most — though the gap has narrowed and varies by segment. Incentive programs can change the effective price of plug-in vehicles, but amounts, eligibility and availability change frequently and vary by buyer and vehicle, so verify what currently applies to you rather than assuming.

Depreciation
The biggest and least predictable cost for any car.
- Gas and hybrid: generally more predictable, with hybrids from established lines often holding value well.
- EV: far wider spread between models. Some hold value strongly; others fall quickly when longer-range versions arrive.
- PHEV: varies, and demand can be thinner in the used market.

Should I buy an EV, a hybrid or a gas car?
Battery electric wins when:
- You have home charging — this is close to a prerequisite for the economics
- You drive a lot — energy and maintenance savings scale with miles
- You keep cars several years, so the savings compound
- Your electricity rate is moderate or you can charge off-peak — see off-peak EV charging
- Long trips are occasional rather than routine
Hybrid wins when:
- You can't charge at home and have no reliable workplace charging
- You drive long distances routinely and don't want to plan around charging
- You want lower fuel cost with zero infrastructure or habit change
- Up-front budget is the binding constraint
Plug-in hybrid wins when:
- You have charging and most daily driving falls inside its electric range
- You take occasional long trips where charging would be inconvenient
- You'll genuinely plug in every day — this is the condition that decides it
Gas wins when:
- You drive very little, so per-mile savings never accumulate
- Lowest possible up-front price is the priority
- You're buying used at a price point where the alternatives aren't available
How does annual mileage change the comparison?
Every per-mile advantage scales with distance, which is why annual mileage decides more than the powertrain does.

- Your annual mileage, from actual history rather than estimate.
- Cost per mile for each candidate, using your real electricity rate and local gas price.
- Annual maintenance estimate for each.
- Real insurance quotes on the specific vehicles.
- Net up-front price after any incentives you've verified you qualify for, plus charger install for plug-ins.
- Expected hold period.
- Depreciation, from actual used listings for each model.
Then compute break-even: net up-front difference ÷ annual running savings. If that's shorter than your hold period, the more expensive car wins.

The bottom line
The powertrain isn't the deciding factor — your mileage and your charging access are. High miles plus home charging makes a BEV hard to beat on running cost. No home charging makes a hybrid the pragmatic pick, delivering much of the fuel saving with none of the logistics. A PHEV only pays off if you actually plug it in daily. And at low mileage, none of the per-mile advantages accumulate fast enough to overcome a price premium.
