kW to HP Calculator

Convert kilowatts to horsepower — or horsepower back to kW. WattSimple shows all three horsepower standards at once (mechanical, electrical, and metric PS), because they are not the same number, plus the input power and current a motor actually draws once you account for its efficiency.

Horsepower here is shaft (output) power. The supply draw is higher because of motor losses, which is why the input kW and amps below exceed the straight conversion. For a real motor circuit, size from the NEC 430.250 full-load-current tables and the nameplate — not from this estimate. Verify with a licensed electrician and your local AHJ.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply kilowatts by 1,000 to get watts, then divide by the watts in one horsepower. For mechanical (US) horsepower that is 745.7 W, so HP = kW × 1.341. Example: 75 kW = 100.6 mechanical HP. To go the other way, HP × 0.7457 = kW.
